PERIDOT HISTORY
We did mention that the consistent demand for peridot gemstone rings is to a certain extent, influenced by the rich history of the gemstone. It would be interesting to learn how the gemstone came to be named 'peridot', such details will undoubtedly give you more pleasure in owning a gold or 925 silver ring with a peridot gemstone. The name peridot comes directly from the French word 'peridot' but, the French word was inspired by the Arabic word 'faridat' which means 'gem'.
Humans interacted with the gemstone thousand of years ago, that was around 1,500 BCE. The Egyptians are believed to be the earliest wearers of peridot. The St. Johns island in the Red Sea was an important mining area for peridot. Green, blue and red gemstones seem to impress both men and women. Kaisilver crafts a few hundred high end peridot gemstone rings each year, these include both finely crafted silver and gold peridot rings.
Many of us know Cleopatra as a lover of exotic gemstones, her jewelry collection included some stunning emerald rings. Gemstone experts realized long after her death that, some of the so called 'emeralds' in her jewelry collection were in fact peridot! The fact that peridot gems were sometimes confused with emerald in those times - is quite clear. Gemology or the study of gemstones has been honed to a science today. You can rest assured that there would be no mix up between emerald rings and peridot rings at Kaisilver!
Talking about emeralds and peridot, an interesting thing comes to mind. The Ancient Romans referred to peridot as the 'evening emerald'. This because the sparkling beauty of peridot is visible even in less than ideal light conditions. Evening is when the sun goes down and that, does not prevent peridot gems from flaunting their amazing beauty. This is something that can experience for yourself if, you have a peridot ring or any other jewel with peridot. Wear your peridot ring in light conditions that are not exactly bright and you would notice that, the gem continues to fascinate.
Coming to more modern times, peridot has been designated as the birthstone for the month of August. The belief is that people born in the month of August, make a special connect to this gorgeous green gemstone. Irrespective of whether you were born in August or not, the belief is that peridot brings peace and harmony, it also attracts success and good luck. You might be surprised to know that, a fair number of Kaisilver peridot rings are ordered by jewelry lovers who, continue to believe in centuries old folklore and traditions.
GOLD OR SILVER
So should you go for a gold or sterling silver peridot ring or, is a peridot silver ring really good enough for casual and formal wear. Most jewelers give secondary importance to silver jewelry, this is no secret. Kaisilver is very likely to be the only high end jewelry provider, to maintain the same superior quality standards for gold and silver jewelry. The green shades of peridot ensure that, the gem looks awesome in all metal colors. Just to recap that Kaisilver, maintains the same superior quality standards for gold and silver jewelry. In the case of a gold peridot ring, specify 10k, 14k or 18k gold and also select white, yellow or pink gold.
When it comes to silver rings with peridot gemstone, here is some important information related to plating silver rings. There is a belief that plating silver jewelry will prevent tarnish formation. If you happen to be thinking of a silver peridot ring, here are some important notes for you. Silver generally develops a slight discoloration over time, this is referred to as tarnish. The good thing is that, cleaning a silver ring that has begun to show tarnish is not a big challenge. Just remember your silver ring with any recommended jewelry grade polishing lotion, cream or fabric - just as it starts to tarnish. Allowing the tarnish to remain and develop, can result in stubborn tarnish that is not easy to clean. The Kaisilver report on Cleaning Silver Jewelry, has some useful information on the topic. The information so far is relevant if, your peridot 925 silver ring has not been plated to start with. In the next paragraph we talk about plated silver rings and tarnish.
We would recommend that you request for no plating on your peridot silver ring or for that matter, on any silver jewelry - keep reading to understand why. Plated silver jewelry will experience a plating wear off over time, this is true of a plated silver peridot gemstone too. When the plating does wear off it happens in patches or streaks, not uniformly across the jewel. The exposed metal will begin to tarnish on portions where the plating has worn off, suffice it to say that the jewel would then appear dull and worn out. Cleaning and polishing the jewel at that point would be quite complicated, this even for a professional. While Kaisilver will ensure the same superior standards for gold and silver peridot rings, our recommendation would not to go for any type of plating on silver. However we will leave the final decision to you.
PERIDOT GEM SIZES
Since we source peridot directly from the mining areas in Arizona, China, Myanmar and Pakistan - we do not place any restriction on gem size or shape. Having said that budgets and economic factors will come into play. The price of peridot and most other gemstones, increases exponentially (per carat) as the gem size moves up. As mentioned at the start of this report on peridot rings, we can craft a unique ring or other jewel for you based on your own design concept. Designs from our websites can also be modified to suit your requirements. As an example the RG137P peridot shown above, can be modified to accommodate a large 14x10mm oval peridot gemstone. The team at Kaisilver would then work out a specific price quote for your requirement.
As a general piece of information, peridot gems in the 1 to 6 carat category should be what you aim for. Popular peridot gem shapes include oval, octagonal, round and trillion. The information mentioned here should not limit your choice if, you have a budget that can accommodate bigger gemstone sizes.
